The Blue Plastic Shoes is set in the parallel universes of 1905 and 2016 and tells the story of a modern and educated woman who, while on a sailing holiday, gets hurled back in time to 1905. The heroine is a highly educated woman, who has to adapt to living in a society where women were mostly restricted to the home, although part of the book is set at a period in history when women were beginning to challenge that assumption. Despite a period of intense desperation at her predicament, the heroine finally accepts what she cannot change and comes to love her life in the ‘past’, despite her new husband’s dark secret. When she finally finds herself back in the present she has an even harder time adjusting. Being back in the world of mobile phones and jet travel is no compensation for the tragic loss of her newborn baby, left behind in the past. At the root of the story is her love for two very different men, and the dilemma she faces when she is forced to come to terms with her loss of each of them in turn.
Set in the incomparable beauty of the West Coast of British Columbia and the burgeoning city of Victoria, Amanda’s book evokes the pioneer spirit of Edwardian Canada, with its colourful characters and wild and remote landscape. Many of the characters in the book are accurate depictions of real life people living at the time.
